I started having some trouble with my '99 Ultra 150 today.
It ran fine for about 30 minutes. When I was riding full throttle across the
lake, the RPMs suddenly dropped down to about 5500. No warning lights or
overheating. I grabbed a handful of throttle, and it jumped back up to full
RPMS. A couple of minutes later, same thing. Let off the throttle for a second,
grab it again, and it shoots right back up to normal. Starts happening more
frequently, and after less time.
Took the ski in, pulled the plugs. Cyl1 and 2 look fine, 3 is very wet and
oily. I thinking, ok, fouled plug. So I cleaned the plug and get back in the
water. Take off, jumps right to full throttle, minute later, RPMs drop back
down. Go back in, take a look at Cyl3 plug, dry and tan, just like the other 2.
Replace all 3 plugs, get back in the water. Exact same thing.
It really feels like one of the cylinders in cutting in and out. Could these
be repeated mild seizures? A short in a spark plug boot? I guess I'll check the
compression of all 3 cylinders.
Anyone experience anything similar?
Nathan

As a followup.... I just checked the compression, and for what it is worth, it
is normal and consistent across all 3 cylinders.

I have the exact same problem with my 900ZXI. My compression is consistent
on all cylinders. >> Stay informed about: Need help with Ultra 150 |

sounds like possible trash in the fuel tank(blocking the pick up) or a clog
somewhere in the fuel system.maybe even a weak fuel pump.not much goes bad on
the electrical on those ski's..i have replaced several fuel pumps.i change them
over to the high flow mikuni pump.makes em start easier too.scott

Thanks for the reply, Scott. I guess a very easy check would be to switch over
to the reserve pickup to see if the primary is blocked somehow.
Just one followup question, if I may. When I was looking around yesterday
trying to find anything obviously wrong, I noticed the air temp sensor had come
unglued from the side of the hull and was dangling just maybe a quarter inch
from the waterbox. It was probably getting really hot, advancing the timing the
full 6 degrees. I am running and ADA head, so my compression is already higher
than normal. In your opinion, could this have anything to do with it? It was
100 degrees that day, so I'm thinking it probably would have advanced at least
3 degrees on its own.
